Centaurs have always been one of my favorite mythical creatures. I'm not entirely sure why, but there is something captivating I find about the concept of a half horse, half human being.
Part of the draw for me is the running. Nothing runs quite like a horse. The raw acceleration and speed that a horse can put down while still managing to look graceful is something that I find awe inspiring. Especially since I lack the ability to run myself.
More than once I've had dreams of being a horse and in them I always run and run and run. That's all I do. For the entire dream I run around my big green pasture and I hardly even get tired! I love those dreams. The day after I have one of those dreams always start out really well.
Then there is the power. With a horses body, a centaur would have the ability to pull almost anything or carry whatever it darn well pleased on its back. That could have some serious perks.
There are some downsides too though. A centaur would have to eat a lot to keep up it's body mass. A horses body would also be hard to clothe and its fiddly bits would always be hanging out in the breeze for everyone to see. Of course there is an up side to that too I suppose if you're a male centaur. (he he he) Ughh, showering would be a pain.
Still though. Being able to pull a car and run 50 mph would would offset, at least for me, the downsides by quite a bit. If centaur gene splicing ever became available I'd certainly think about signing up!
Anyway, you can see where my fascination in centaurs lies and that's probably why this article from USAtoday grabbed my attention.
Personally I think an exhibit like this is neat. It excites the mind to pretend that something like this could have existed even though in all likely hood it could not. The anatomical hurdles would just be too great.
It's still fun though to think that this:
Could have looked like this:
See? Doesn't it look like she's enjoying herself?
